For our first project in my Fine Art 2135 course titled "Design in Contemporary Art," as taught by Vancouver artist Paulo Majano, we had to shoot "...15 photographs of the world around (us), looking for distinct, clear design and composition elements to be used as a source to create abstract compositions using Adobe Illustrator." The aim of the project was to "...sensitize the eye to the world as a source of inspiration for design."
In taking the photographs, we had to consider a number of elements including "...shape, the use of negative space to create shape, repeating patterns, clear colour forms, arrangement and the use of unusual angles, closeups or exaggerated perspectives."
With some of the photographs in this series, I wanted to explore the man made and natural organic images created within spaces, such as those created by the shadows in a parking lot at sunset.

I found the colours of the fall are always wonderfully enhanced by the strong light at sunset, as captured in this photograph of a tree.

I've always had fun shooting from inside my car while waiting in a carwash. There are many organically abstracted shapes and unusual colours that appear.

I love strong shadows and the abstract variation of images that can be created from them.

This old tree created an interesting array of shadows on the grass. I love the shadows from across the street reaching out onto the pavement like fabricated shadows on the street.

This 40"x40" digital print is a collage of over 100 individual pieces of junk mail received by Steven Lee between 2008 and 2012. Each side of each piece of junk mail was photographed and the final image was assembled in Photoshop in September 2012. The image was printed onto the same kind of sticker paper that is used by many companies to place advertisements on the floors of shopping market aisles. This image was stuck to the floor of the art gallery's entrance, forcing viewers to immediately confront it when they walked into the gallery. So many of these ads usually go straight to people's recycling bin, and presenting them in this way allows viewers to look at them for what they are, or as they might see when they are piled up in a recyling bin. Steven still has most of the junk mail advertisements he has received in the mail over the years and plans on doing further projects with them.

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s lawn and steps is a regular gathering spot for protests and demonstrations throughout the year. Many of these demonstrations, such as the "protect Christians and others from eradication" demonstration, held on the afternoon of September 23, 2012 receive little to no media coverage.
All of the individual images here were shot with a Sony DSC-HX30V.
