every cup tells a story... (image 1 of 7)
This photograph was taken as part of a project in Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Fine Arts 1270: Photography II course as taught by Vancouver artist Kira Wu in the fall of 2010.
The project tasked students with creating an advertisement or artwork that questioned, subverted ('subvertise') or satirized some aspect of our popular culture. I also used Photoshop to edit the photograph and to add the logo and text contained in my adbusters-like 'subvertizement' which highlighted the fact that, at the time, Tim Horton's cups were not biodegradable, and to highlight Tim Horton's poor environmental record. Since producing this 'subvertisement,' Tim's has done a lot to encourage the recycling of its cups, but still, they litter the streets. I may revise this project to focus on the fact that as consumers, we have the responsibility to ensure our cups don't end up in the landfill or on the side of the road.
